Doi Tung and Mae Fah Luang Garden
Doi Tung in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand is home to what is perhaps the most stunningly beautiful garden in the whole of Thailand. The name of this Thailand garden on the slopes of Doi Tung is Mae Fah Luang Garden. Mae Fah Luang Garden was constructed by the Doi Tung Development Project and is located 950 Meters above sea level. The idea for this project came from Her Royal Highness, the Princess Mother whose intention was to improve the economy of the Doi Tung area and to give the ethnic Hill Tribe people in this area of Thailand an opportunity to become independent and to practice their considerable horticultural skills. Mae Fah Luang Garden, which covers an area of 12 Rai, was opened in 1992.

This park/garden grows winter flowers and decorative plants with beautiful flowers taking turn to bloom season by season. To date, the park extends additional 13 rai for stone, water, palm and other winter flower gardens.
The Sculpture of Children Standing on one another in the center of the Park. It received PATA GOLD AWARDS in 1993 of Pacific Tourist Associations for Thailand in terms of good development of attractions.
The area of the Mae Fah Luang Garden on Doi Tung was previously an Akha Hill Tribe village called Pa Kluay and in the past was on a major route for Opium smuggling. The Doi Tung Development Project came to an agreement with the Akha villagers and re-located the village to a nearby area that had an electricity supply, running water and enough land for future expansion.
The centerpiece of this magnificent landscaped garden is a sculpture of children climbing and was kindly donated by her Royal Highness who gave it the name “Continuity”. With 30% of the plants being changed every ten days,Mae Fah Luang Garden is a riot of color throughout the year. In 1993 the garden received a PATA award for tourist development and project design.
From the very beginning, the Doi Tung Development Project encouraged the local villagers to become involved first as employees and later to run their own gardening businesses on land made available to them at reasonable rates and today the villagers raise and sell many thousands of pot plants under contract to the project.
Mae Fah Luang Garden on Doi Tung receives over 1 million visitors, both Thai and Foreign every year, a fitting tribute to the foresight of the late Princess Mother and the hard work of all the people involved in the project.
